BKLYN DESIGNS: An Ethnography

My attendance at BKLYN DESIGNS on Saturday with Erica was more along the lines of ethnographic study than retail therapy.

I was filled with lust for a surprisingly lot of the environmentally pure, reclaimed, locally-grown, and inventive furniture/stuff.

True, it was all very aspirational since the chances of my actually having the disposable income to buy this faboo brass-inlaid, secret drawer side table for $2600 from design duo colleen & eric, are about as good as my flying off to a northstar in a rocket ship. But then again, a girl can dream (sidenote: Grace from design*sponge loved the crap out of this table too).

I parked my junior journalist at the kids table, where she spent an hour painstakingly decorating a squid mask and eating vegan cookies thanks to the crunchy breeder-friendly folks at Argington. [ed note: Allison's kid has got the skillz to pay the billz! Check this little squid OUT!]:

Anyway, back to the action...

Let it be said that Pratt completely rules. I didn’t know. I’m sorry for not taking you all seriously before now, Pratts. I will never make that mistake again. Charlotte Kreitmann, designer of the awe-inspiring and brilliantly-named SCHAIR: please honor that prematurely uttered production price of $150 for that awesome splitting chair and I’ll buy 6. Even if my butt can't fit. And is that steel rod back comfortable? (UPDATE: crap, CK knows she's on to a good thing: ballpark price now guesstimated hypothetically at $150-400)

Erica was all over the wallpaper exhibits. If I never hear the word “takeaway” again it will be too soon but that was hers. She’s got her finger on the pulse, I tell you, ‘cause that shit WAS really beautiful. And not like the pasty mess of old. Sadly, I learned, you need a smooth wall below so you can’t get out of skim-coating the crappy wall by covering it up (ed note: also, don't forget Grow House Grow...that shit was gorge too!).

And can't you see this in Erica's styling small apartment? Just $6700. Ottoman sold separately.

Anyway, can’t wait ‘til next year. The work was REALLY, REALLY beautiful. And maybe one of you can actually afford it.

Just one special piece could surely make a space more distinctive than a roomful of mediocrity.

I missed out it seems... I had more than enough design events for one weekend though. Maybe I shoulda hit this instead of design on a dime!
