CFLS To Suck Less, Apparently
For the last few years, the media has done a pretty good job convincing us that continuing to use incandescent light bulbs is the equivalent of telling a baby polar bear to its face that you don't give a shit about the melting ice caps. Unfortunately, anyone who's been guilted into using a CFL light bulb in their home knows that it instantly gives your place all the sexy lighting qualities of a supermarket.
Also, it takes the damn things f-o-r-e-v-e-r to power up to their full brightness level, which makes them useless if you're trying to go down the basement steps without tripping and dying.
Well, nothing except botox and under eye concealer can help how terrible your face looks in flourescent lighting just yet, but GE announced last week that they will soon be producing hybrid CFLs with "instant-on"capabilities.
They've stuck a teeny halogen bulb in there, that shuts off as soon as the CFL reaches full brightness so the 15 or 20 second waiting period is no more. These puppies are supposedly going to hit the market at some point next year and will be avail in both 15 and 20w bulb versions (equivalent to 60w and 75w). No word yet on how much these things will cost or where you can buy them, but I'm going to go out on a limb and guess supermarkets, pharmacies and hardware stores.
